Spring Cleaning Your Home’s Exterior

Your home protects you from the elements but you have to protect it a little too. Spring is upon us and it might be time to start thinking about cleaning up the outside of your house. A little maintenance can help keep your home looking great and make it last a long time.

Fortunately, cleaning the outside of your home is easier than you might think. With just a little time and the right tool you can have your home looking ready for company.

https://www.bobvila.com/articles/how-to-clean-wood-siding/?How to Clean Wood Siding – Bob Vila Think your wood siding needs a fresh coat of paint? Maybe. Or it could be that your wood clapboard, lap, or shingle siding simply needs a thorough cleaning.

Homeowners have always prized wood for its unparalleled appearance, but like any siding material, it requires periodic maintenance. With wood in particular, the challenge is to avoid doing more harm than good. For instance, you might be tempted to clean wood siding with a pressure washer, thinking it would make quick work of things. Do so at your own risk. Using such a high-powered tool can actually cause several types of damage, including stripped paint, gouged boards, and loosened caulk. Plus, if the pressure washer manages to send water through the joints and behind the boards, the errant moisture could end up fostering mold growth or triggering wood rot. In short, unless you’re deeply familiar with the operation of a pressure washer, don’t point one at the most visible part of your home.

Besides, if you really want to give new life to your wood siding, it’s likely that water alone won’t do the trick—you’ll need to scrub too. A full-featured garden hose attachment like the HYDE PivotPro Outdoor Cleaning Wand includes everything you need to achieve a satisfying, beautiful result. Read on to learn how to clean wood siding safely and effectively with a single tool. Read more…

We’ve collected some essential do’s and don’ts to help you find a hue you’ll be happy and proud to live with for years.

Planning Your Summer Garden In Dallas

Spring is upon us and many homeowners are starting to think about their gardens and what they want to grow this year. Finding the right combination of plants that look good in your garden, will do well in our climate, and will yield some fresh produce is no easy task. At Lon Smith Roofing we think those difficult tasks are worth it when it makes your home more beautiful.

If you are planning your summer garden check out some of these tips from Monica Rose in D Magazine.

https://www.dmagazine.com/publications/d-home/2017/marchapril/monica-rose-is-leading-an-edible-shift-in-dallas/Monica Rose Is Leading An Edible Shift In Dallas – D Magazine

Knee-deep in dirt, two Rottweilers by her side, Monica Rose tends to her thoughtfully planted culinary gardens as a painter would contemplate every stroke—she nourishes, pinches, gathers produce, replants. Granted, these are elemental tasks for any gardener, but Rose is far from a hobbyist grower—at 27, she is quietly pioneering a farm-to-table movement from the backyards of many Dallas homeowners.

While tending to a community garden on Concho Street in Austin, the Dallas native’s life path was changed: “I realized I was in love with plants,” she says. She pursued her bachelor’s degree in environmental science at the University of Texas at Austin and took a job at a local nursery. She also got her certification in landscape design and native Texas gardening. In 2014, she launched Edible Landscapes Dallas after repeated requests to cultivate personal, “menu-specific” gardens. She now has the incredible challenge of designing, installing, and maintaining nearly 100 bespoke gardens for homeowners in Highland Park, Addison, Plano, Arlington, and Dallas and also offers landscape, floral, and interior plant design services.  Read more…

When You Need Help Right Away, Do You Know The Plumber To Call?

A pipe just burst. Water is coming out of your ceiling. Your drains won’t drain. When the time comes to call a plumber, you need help and you need it right away. But you don’t want to just call the first number you see. You need to know that the plumber you are hiring is experienced and qualified. They are after all, responsible for keeping your home safe from expensive future damages.

Knowing the plumber to call before you NEED to call them can help you know that you are getting quality work done at a reasonable price. Check out these tips on how to choose a high-quality plumber.

https://www.angieslist.com/articles/6-tips-hiring-plumber.htm6 Tips For Hiring a Plumber
Hiring a plumber is an important decision that shouldn’t be taken lightly by homeowners. Plumbers are responsible for repairing some of the most important parts of the home like the toilet, faucet and water heater. Failure to hire a high-quality or experienced plumber can result in costly and dangerous repairs in the future.

Consider the following tips before hiring a plumber:

1. Licensure – Most states require plumbers to hold a license, though a couple of states like New York and Kansas do not. If your state does not require licensing, check to see if there have been any formal complaints filed against the plumber you are considering.

2. Insurance – Plumbers should be insured. In some cases, they may also need to be bonded as well. Insurance will protect both you and the plumber in case of an injury or accident.

3. Length of time in business – Ask the plumber how long he or she has been in business. A larger company will likely have plumbers with years of experience, but you should still ask. It’s a good sign if the company has been in business for several years because it often means it has a proven track record of quality work. Read more…

SXSW Brings Some Extra Traffic and Funny Signs

If you are staying with us at Dwelling Suites in San Antonio you have probably already heard that the next couple weeks are going to have some pretty crazy traffic. That is just one of the trade-offs of having a world-renowned festival take over the city.

If the traffic has got you down you might get some enjoyment out of these photos!

Owner Ryan Petty came up with the quip this week and shared a video of the sign on his business’ Facebook page Wednesday morning. Since then, the video and versions of it posted by other Facebook users has racked up almost half a million views and more than 10,000 shares.

“We thought it would be a good idea to give all the SXSW visitors a taste of how backwards our road systems are here,” said Petty.

Petty said he tries to come up with new messages regularly for commuters to see along Highway 71/Ben White Boulevard, across from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. He also posts them on Instagram.

Petty, who has lived in Austin for almost 20 years, launched Imperial Traffic about six months ago. The company provides barricades and traffic signs and helps the city coordinate road closures.

With the yearly SXSW conference and festival kicking off today, many Austinites have taken to social media to vent their traffic frustrations. See them in the gallery above.
Petty’s go-to tip for all visitors?

“Avoid I-35 at all costs.” See more…

Protections for Wyoming Homeowners

At Interstate Roofing we have always warned our clients to be on the lookout for storm-chasing contractors. The truth is that in this business not everyone is looking out for your best interest. When a company can pop up overnight, take your money, and then disappear, something needs to be done.

We have been roofing Cheyenne and the surrounding areas for a long time and we are glad this new legislation is going out to protect the homeowners.

http://www.insurancejournal.com/news/west/2017/03/13/444267.htmWyoming to Protect Homeowners from Storm-Chasing Contractors

Wyoming Gov. Matt Mead made his the 28th state to enact legislation designed to protect homeowners who have suffered damage as a result of a hailstorm from being victimized a second time by storm-chasing contractors.

The move was applauded by the Property Casualty Insurers Association of America.

“Senate File 127 implements important protections for homeowners that sustain hail damage to their home and then are targets of fraud by out-of-town contractors who follow storms,” said Kelly Campbell, vice president, state government relations for PCI. “Frequently unscrupulous contractors quickly move into a town after a storm, force homeowners into fast contracts before insurers even approve the claim, then move on to the next storm, leaving shoddy repairs and no recourse for the homeowner.” Read more…
